Foot
care with foot reflexology - Taking good care of your feet with therapy
Foot massage and
foot reflexology aim at applying and shifting pressure at the soles,
toes and other parts of the feet to provide general relaxation to the
feet as well as to the rest of the body and mind.
While these two may
seem very similar, there is considerable difference between the two.
While any layman can massage a foot, reflexology requires the
specialized expertise and skill of a reflexologist.

What
is foot reflexology?
It is a pressure
therapy that involves applying measured and focused pressure on certain
reflex points located on the soles of the feet. Reflexologists believe
that a network of small veins and arteries in meridians or energy lines
exists in the soles and also on the palms of the hands. According to
them, certain points and areas in this network have a very important
bearing on overall health of human beings. Again, the reflex points at
the soles of the feet are even more important than those on the palms
of the hands. This is because the reflex points start from the bottom
of the feet and then go up towards the head. Going by this premise,
soles have the topmost importance in our health map. (Why do you think
there is an expression "The world at your feet").
Foot care obviously
means ensuring that one's feet are not subjected to undue stresses,
which are often the cause for most foot pain, be it in the heel, sole
or foot arch. It means using the right foot care products - be it
footwear or as necessary orthotic shoe insoles, shoe inserts, heel
pads.
It also helps to
regularly relax and relieve the feet of all the built-up stresses. The
benefit of reflexology is that not only does it provide local foot care
and relief, but its effects on the feet spiral up and travel throughout
the body affecting the glands and other organs right up to the head.
Strange though it
may seem, in ancient times, people did not wear shoes but walked
barefoot on the rough and uneven ground consisting of stones and rocks.
As a result, pressure was automatically applied upon the vital points
on the soles. This prevented a number of foot ailments and other health
problems that people encounter today! Reflexology on the feet aims to
provide the same pressure on the required points
Reflexological
pressure on specific points on the soles relaxes the taut nerves. It
reinvigorates the tired feet and aching soles. It also imparts a very
relaxing, pleasing and a wholesome tingling sensation to the feet and
the total effect is simply revitalizing. According to the
reflexologists, there is an energy field in the human body, which must
remain balanced to keep the body and mind healthy. A slight disturbance
in this field causes illness. Reflexology on the foot cures this
imbalance and restores the right equilibrium.
Since certain
points on the soles of the feet require special pressure, a general
foot massage may not be a right substitute for reflexology. This is
because some of the reflex points are too deep for superficial massage.
The pressure applied by reflexologists is not only deeper and measured
but is also applied at precise angles. The pressure may also hurt
sometimes, but the relaxation more or less compensates when you feel
the feet being worked at a certain tempo or rhythm.
