Getting a foot massage
Let's get our hands and feet dirty and discuss how to go about this simple foot care method. One is the DIY approach to foot massage; better still, you can get it done by another person, preferably a foot masseuse.
If you want to do the foot massage yourself, sit comfortably on a sofa or chair and put your foot in your lap. However, there is someone else to massage your foot, you can comfortably recline on a pillow; let some soft and melodious music, vocal or instrumental, help relax your nerves.
Before actually starting the massage, you must make sure to clean your feet with soap and preferably warm water. Scrub the heels and the spaces between the toes. A dirty and foul smelling foot may put off the masseuse. The soles should also be mirror clean.
Next, dip your feet in water mixed with Epsom salt and rub softly up and down with a piece of cloth or a soft scrubber. Epsom salt is a wonderful de-stressor. Wipe them dry with a towel now.
A massage using aromatherapy and therapeutic massage oils can be quite useful. In fact, a massage with castor oil, or still better lavender oil, can work wonders.
Massaging is basically rubbing, a kind of soft friction, which causes heat to be produced. The idea, therefore, behind massaging is that it causes a sort of movement in the blood vessels and makes them warm. As the saying goes, maintaining a cool head and warm feet is the secret of sanity and good health.
There are other ways to perform a foot massage.
Stroking
A simple massage may be performed up and down or left and right. You can start with the upper portion of the foot using your thumb to stroke the foot gently and then gradually increasing the pressure, starting from the toes and moving up to the ankle.
Ankle Rotation
First, gently move the ankle side to side to loosen the joint. Cup the heel of the foot with one hand. Hold the ball of the foot with the other hand. Now, gently rotate the foot five times both clockwise and counterclockwise.
Pivoting
Hold the foot gently in one hand and ply the thumb of the other hand to massage the sole of the foot beginning with the area below the large toe. Then, slowly move to the other toes. Increase the pressure gradually and release it. Pivoting can prove a very relaxing massage.
Kneading
Use your thumb and finger tips to knead the foot with your knuckles at your second joints like you knead the dough. Be sure to knead gently.
Avoid sore feet and foot hurt. Treat yourself to a professional foot massage regularly and take good care of your feet, by giving it adequate rest, using the right footwear, and where necessary, using appropriate foot care orthodics such as an orthotic shoe insert or shoe insoles.
